dr. Zoltán Pogátsa, PhD

Zoltán Pogátsa is an economist, sociologist, habilitated associate professor, and expert in international political economy. Associate professor at the University of Sopron and former researcher at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is currently a lecturer at ELTE and a former lecturer at the Central European University. He is a regular lecturer at the universities of Verona, Leipzig, and Leeuwarden, and is the program director of the Széchenyi István Doctoral School of Management and Organizational Sciences at the University of Sopron.

He received his doctoral degree from the University of Sussex, which was accepted by the PhD program in Economics at Corvinus University. He is regularly invited to Hungarian television debate shows and podcasts.

Between 1985 and 1992, he attended the New English School Kuwait English grammar school and the József Attila Grammar School in Budapest. He continued his higher education at Eötvös Loránd University in Sociology, graduating in 1999 with a research degree. In 1997–98, he studied political science and international relations at the University of Westminster in London with a TEMPUS scholarship.

After graduating from ELTE, he studied MA in Southeast European Studies at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest from 1999 to 2000. Between 2001 and 2003, he completed an MBA in Economics and Finance at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He was a PhD student at the University of Sussex, Brighton, from 1998 to 2004, where he received his PhD in 2004, which was accepted by the PhD School of Economics at Corvinus University in Hungary.

From 1999, he was a lecturer and researcher at the Sándor Lámfalussy Faculty of Economics of the University of West Hungary, then an associate professor, and in the meantime, he was an assistant professor and researcher at BME between 2000 and 2005. Between 2005 and 2015, he was a member of the Regional Competitiveness Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

He was the leader of cooperation and research projects, such as the Hungarian-Serbian Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Programme 2007–2013, VÁTI Strategic Planning Directorate, lead planner, Hungarian-Croatian Cross-Border Cooperation Operational Programme 2007–2013, VÁTI Strategic Planning Directorate, lead planner, then a member of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Eastern European Research faculty of the University of Bologna, a topic announcer of the Doctoral School of the University of West Hungary. He regularly teaches at the Business School of the Central European University and at Corvinus University.

In 2013, he researched the Greek crisis in Athens with a Greek state scholarship, and summarized the results of his work in a book. During his teaching work, he lectured on the economics of European integration, international political economy, the economy of Central Europe, and EU policies. His research area is European integration, with a special focus on the countries of the periphery. Since 2020, he has been a speaker at the Scientific Stand Up event organization company.
